Heliora – Zeke Helio

Heliora is the unrecorded son of Helios (the sun) and a nymph named Neaera. Born the middle child between his two sisters, Phaethusa and Lampetia, he is what is called a demi-god, and the personification of sunlight and heat.

Heliora’s job was to watch over and protect his sisters as they watched over their father’s herd of cattle on Thrinacia. Since they were more nymph-like, like their mother, and didn’t have the greater powers of their father, they could do little more then tend to the herds. But while Heliora was supposed to be doing his job, he often left them to their own doings and went to play with his cousins. For a long while he could often be found with Apollo, where they would sit and discuss science and art and music. Eventually Apollo bored Heliora when he took over Helios’ position as the chariot driver of the sun. He then took up to spending time with Hermes and learnt many of his younger cousin’s wily ways. Together they created much havoc. Soon Heliora got out of hand and his annoyed father sent him to study under Hephaestus to settle him down.

It didn’t take Heliora long to grow tired of the crippled god of forge. He often ran circles around the man knowing he could not catch him before running off to hide with Hades, his father’s cousin. Hades didn’t mind having Heliora around, his light would often warm his cool skin, and he secretly missed the sun that he could not see often due to his position as lord of the underworld.

Eventually Heliora grew tired of Hades and went to find his brother, Zeus. Zeus was quick to take the young demi under his wing. It didn’t take Heliora long to pick up on the traits of the king of the gods. He turned into a womanizer and a cheat. He slept with whichever woman grabbed his fancy, sometimes with several at a time only to vanish on them the morning after. Soon he grew weary of that company and turned to men, as he had seen his once best friend Apollo do.

With all the mischief making he’d picked up from Hermes, and the darkness from Hades and the sly tongue and wit from Zeus, Heliora became cocky and unstoppable. He did as he pleased on a whim, and if a person bored or angered him he would shine his brilliant light upon them, blinding them. He would even go as far setting them ablaze. Heliora was crafty with his own knowledge as well, always using a different name and taking on a persona of another god. He was untraceable, which is part of the reason he never got recorded into any of the histories. Eventually Helios became furious with his son, ashamed of the havoc he’d wreck and the disregard for the mortals the gods were meant to watch over. He, and a few others, decided that he should be locked away in Tartarus.

Heliora spent the next thousand years locked away in a cell in the lowest regions of the earth. He was never lonely though. While there, he met his great uncle, father to 2 of his mentors, grandfather to the rest, Cronos. Cronos approved of what Heliora did, who he had become. He was a mere demi and yet he knew his place in the universe. Humans were just play things for their power.

Heliora was sure that he’d been forgotten during his stay until one day when his younger sister, Phaethusa came to visit. He manipulated her feelings for him and managed to convince her to help him escape. However, he did have a minute conscience and felt bad for having his sister commit the act. He ordered her to go back to Thrinacia and never speak of what she had done. And then he fled to the underworld, where Hades welcomed him with open arms. Not only did he enjoy the light he provided, his wife Persephone often longed for the sun during her stays and liked to spend her time with Heliora.

Heliora stayed until he couldn’t take the bordem anymore. A creature of habit, Heliora returned to the land of the living. He knew he couldn’t stay anywhere his family had power, so he left Greece, passing Rome and Egypt and going north to Ireland.

He spent many centuries in Ireland, changing his name from the sun-like name of Heliora to Zeke, a name which blended into the culture a little better. He spent his time there learning about the cultures and myths. It was here that he learned of the Christians and picked up the name of demon. Before too long Zeke had had enough of the green and banshee’s and many other mystical ghouls of the isles and made his way west, to the America’s.

He landed in New Orleans. Here things were dark and dank, and the black art of voodoo was at its highest peak of popularity. He had heard rumours of the Moirae having crossed the oceans to stop it, and while it had succeeded in many other places, here there were powerful magicks and priests known as witch doctors to stop them. Zeke learnt much during his stay in the Bayou, including his first encounter with a vampire.

Eventually Zeke could feel something tugging at him, at his very soul. Something that not only drew him, but the creatures he’d come to know away from the swamps of New Orleans. He followed his instincts to The City.
